This area shows the largely residential estate of Telok Kurau and the eastern edge of Joo Chiat estate. Both estates have a long history, pre-dating Singapore's independence and were already populated at a time when the southern coastline of Singapore was much nearer to here - before reclamation of the sea was done to create what is today's Marine Parade.
Some of that history and legacy remains today in the old houses that can still be found in the area, alongside newer bungalows, walk-up apartments and small condominiums.
Many of the streets in the Telok Kurau estate are named with alphabetical Lorongs :- Lorong G/H/J/K/L/M and N. Joo Chiat estate (Ramubtan Road, Chiku Road, Pulasan Rd and Koon Seng Road) occupies the left(west) side of the Still Road, but a few eponymous roads can be found within Telok Kurau estate, namely, Joo Chiat Walk, Joo Chiat Avenue, and Joo Chiat Place which is so long it stretches across both estates. In the Telok Kurau part of Joo Chiat Place is situated East Shore Hospital and Medical Centre, a private hospital which is part of the Parkway Medical Group.
At the top-left corner of the map, near the junction of Still Road and Changi Road, is Telok Kurau Secondary School (3 Chin Cheng Avenue).
